Mountains, a favorite poster subject since the 1930s
The ski resorts of the Alps have inspired countless tourism posters since the 1930s. Skiers mid-descent, chalets and snow-covered peaks make up the most common scenes. For a tour of the ranges and resorts, destination by destination, see our guide to the Alps and Pyrenees.
The chalet and its scenes of everyday life
Beyond skiing, some posters show calmer scenes: a chalet in Savoy surrounded by cows, an alpine lake crossed by canoe, a cabin in a mountain forest. Plenty of ways to vary the mood without leaving the theme.
Where to hang a mountain poster
In a chalet or mountain home, it naturally extends the decor. Elsewhere, it works just as well in a living room or entryway, bringing a little altitude to your home all year round. The A3 size suits most walls. For a chalet with a larger wall, an A2 or A1 strengthens the effect above a fireplace or a sofa.
Combining several mountain posters
Mixing a ski scene, a summit view and a chalet works if the posters share a similar palette, for example whites and cool blues, and the same type of frame.
Cable car and train, 2 ways to go up without skiing
Beyond the ski descents and chalets presented above, the poster of the red cable car cabin above snowy peaks and the one of the Les Arcs cable car, suspended above the slopes, frame the cabin itself, not the slope. The poster of the Grenoble cable car and its bubbles up to the Bastille and the one of the Pau funicular each add a specific city to this same subject. The mountain train is a 3rd way up: the poster of the red steam train on a viaduct and the one of the red Montenvers train facing the Mer de Glace show the train rather than the suspended cabin.
Fishing and snowshoes, 2 activities calmer than skiing
The poster of the fly fisherman in a torrent, beneath a stone bridge, frames a summer activity, with no snow or skier. The poster of wooden snowshoes planted in front of a chalet stays in winter, but at a slower pace than the descent, for those looking for altitude without the speed.
Waterfall and nature reserve, a different landscape from the snowy summit
The poster of the great waterfall of the Cirque de Gavarnie shifts the mood: rushing water and rock walls rather than snow or a summit, for those who prefer a landscape that is greener than white.
Combine activities rather than repeating the snow
For a mountain wall that doesn’t show a ski scene 3 times, it’s better to combine a ski or chalet scene already presented, a cable car or train scene, and a calmer activity (fishing, snowshoes or waterfall), rather than 3 very similar posters.
Summer and winter on the same wall
Fly fishing (summer) and snowshoeing (winter) pair well with the ski scenes already mentioned to show the mountains in every season, rather than just one.
